The NIS ‘Technology Building’ is located in the Headquarters of Nigeria Immigration Service, along Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Road, Sauka, Abuja. The building’ covers a gross floor area of 3,600 square meters – a reinforced concrete structure sitting on a raft foundation with two suspended floors.
Distinguishing features of the “Technology Building’ include double-skin walls, energy-saving lighting fittings and air-conditioning equipment, fire strategy consideration, and top-notch passive/active ICT component. This project involved comprehensive architectural, cost, and engineering services in the design of a multi-functional technology building, housing the data and command centre of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and built along the Abuja Airport Road. Understanding the contextual framework was a key factor in weaving the design into the existing fabric of the well-built-up environment of the NIS.
An introverted approach was employed to showcase the stunning features of the building, making it the cynosure of all eyes within its immediate surroundings. The dramatic and welcoming double-volume hall entrance is complemented at the roof level with a skylight that illuminates the NIS logo as a symbolic expression of a leading light. The fluidity and continuity of the circulation space makes the ease of movement in the NIS building achieved in multiple ways. The spaces are easily discoverable as the user walks in and out of the building with relative ease.
The lift, which is also located at the core of the building, is one of such that generates surprises and interesting visuals, thus provoking sensation and perception. The various lighting methods employed in the interior spaces serve to provide a cohesive spatial experience creating an intersection between art and technology. The integration of industrial and technological components makes the building finely adaptable to its environment. The use of light sensors allows for energy efficiency through the harvesting of daylight that eliminates electric power wastage, while ensuring optimum lighting at all times.
